Fountain University Hosts 4th Inaugural Lecture, Highlights Need for Stronger Labour Laws

A Professor of Economics and former Acting Vice Chancellor of Fountain University, Professor Abdullateef Usman has delivered the University’s 4th inaugural lecture. Titled “From Honeypot to Tinderbox: The Trajectory of Nigeria’s Most Valuable Asset,” the thought-provoking lecture emphasized the imperative of strengthening labour laws to safeguard workers’ rights.

Under the distinguished chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, Professor Usman, a renowned economics expert, stressed that Nigeria’s economic future hinges on its labour market. He underscored the significance of employment rates, labour productivity, education, and skills development in driving national growth.

“The implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage is a step in the right direction, but labour laws must be strengthened to prevent exploitation,” Professor Usman asserted. “Effective labour policies, robust social security systems, and fair minimum wage practices are essential for promoting industrial harmony and reducing productivity loss due to strikes.”

Professor Usman also advocated for economic diversification, urging Nigeria to explore opportunities beyond oil dependence. “By doing so, we can unlock our true potential and ensure sustainable growth,” he noted.

The lecture, held at the Amina Namadi Sambo Multipurpose Hall, drew attendance from the academic community, dignitaries, and the general public. Fountain University’s commitment to intellectual discourse, academic excellence, and community engagement shone through in this enlightening event.
