The approval, conveyed in an official communication addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, recognizes the laboratory's growing contributions to biomedical research, training, and capacity development in key areas including molecular biology, genomics, cancer research, translational biomedical sciences, and related disciplines.
According to the correspondence, the designation affirms the University's continued commitment to research excellence, innovation, and human capital development. It also positions the MBGD Laboratory as one of the selected centres where fellows under the Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Programme will receive structured practical training and professional mentorship.
Under the programme, selected fellows will undertake a 12-month intensive training at the MBGD Laboratory, where they will acquire hands-on experience in molecular and cellular biology techniques, biomedical research methods, laboratory management, scientific communication, data interpretation, and translational research. The initiative is expected to strengthen participants' technical competencies while enhancing their research capacity and career development.
The approval further reinforces Fountain University's growing reputation as a contributor to Nigeria's research ecosystem by providing an additional platform for advancing research visibility, institutional partnerships, and strategic collaborations within the biomedical sciences.
The communication, signed by Professor Afolabi-Balogun N.B., Principal Investigator of the Centre, also acknowledged the University's sustained investment in research, innovation, and capacity-building initiatives, describing the institutional support as instrumental to the laboratory's development and recognition.
Receiving the approval, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, described the development as another testament to Fountain University's deliberate investment in research infrastructure and academic excellence.
She noted that the recognition aligns with the University's vision of becoming a globally competitive institution driven by innovation, impactful research, and solution-oriented scholarship.
Professor Karim further commended the Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, the Department of Chemical Sciences, and the MBGD Laboratory team for their dedication to advancing scientific research, expressing confidence that the new status would open additional opportunities for national and international collaborations.
The latest recognition adds to the growing list of research milestones recorded by Fountain University and further consolidates its position as an emerging hub for scientific innovation, postgraduate research, and capacity development in Nigeria.
