About the Department

The Private and Business Law programme is structured to ensure that graduates have a comprehensive knowledge of law, focusing on the legal principles governing private and commercial relationships. Law affects every facet of society, and this programme is designed to give students a solid understanding of how law interacts with various social, economic, and political systems.

The programme introduces students to key areas of law, legal reasoning, and methods of judicial analysis. It also serves as an intellectual platform that encourages critical thinking about the operation and relevance of laws, particularly as they relate to business and private affairs. Legal education should inspire students to evaluate the societal implications of laws, with an emphasis on how statutory, common, customary, and business laws coexist in contemporary society.

Mission

The mission of the Department aligns with that of the University—to produce competent, resourceful graduates who maintain high moral standards regardless of race, tribe, religion, or political inclinations. This will be achieved through effective programmes and services, the provision of adequate resources, and a qualified and professional faculty.

Vision

The Department aspires to be a premier centre of learning in Private and Business Law, contributing meaningfully to legal scholarship and practice. We are committed to developing an innovative learning environment that enhances intellectual curiosity, professional competence, and ethical practice, empowering our students to excel in both private law and business law sectors, and to contribute positively to society.
