WELCOME TO THE FOUNTAIN UNIVERSITY STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE UNIT (SIWES): PREPARING TOMORROW'S PROFESSIONALS TODAY

Introduction

Welcome to the Student Industrial Work Experience Unit (SIWES) at Fountain University! SIWES is a pioneering programme designed to provide our students with essential industrial exposure and hands-on experience, fitting them with the professional skills and practical knowledge required to excel in their chosen fields. Our SIWES programme is in line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) vision and aims to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world practices.

Programme Objectives:

At Fountain University, our SIWES programme focuses on the following key objectives:

  1. Enhance students’ technical skills, communication abilities, and teamwork aptitude through industrial experience.
  2. Develop and foster a professional work ethic consistent with industry standards and values.
  3. Encourage networking and industry engagement to open up future employment opportunities for our students.
  4. Cultivate a culture of innovative thinking and problem-solving by adapting to real-world industrial challenges.

Eligibility and Placement:

The SIWES programme is compulsory for all eligible students across various disciplines at Fountain University. The programme commences immediately after the completion of the third semester of the student’s third year. Participating departments include but are not limited to:

  1. Mathematical and Computer Science
  2. Biological Sciences
  3. Mass Communication
  4. Nursing
  5. Medical Laboratory Science
  6. Public Health and Environmental Sciences

With a well-structured collaboration between the Student Industrial Work Experience Unit, industrial partners, and the university, students are provided with suitable placement opportunities aligned with their courses.

Duration and Monitoring:

Our students undergo a 24-week-long (six months) intensive industrial training programme, during which they are assigned to organizations related to their respective fields. A dedicated SIWES coordinator continuously liaises with industrial organizations and supervises the students’ performance during the training period, ensuring that they adhere to established guidelines and codes of conduct.

Evaluation and Skills Assessment:

To monitor a student’s progress throughout the SIWES programme, regular evaluations and assessments are performed. It is mandatory for all students to submit a comprehensive report on the completion of the programme, highlighting their learning experiences, achievements, and challenges encountered during the industrial training period. Additionally, Fountain University assesses the students through feedback received from their assigned workplace supervisors, reflecting the students’ overall performance and professionalism.

At Fountain University, we believe that the Student Industrial Work Experience Unit plays a vital role in molding our students into competent professionals. Our SIWES programme not only provides practical know-how but also familiarizes them with the professional work environment, instills confidence, and grooms them for their future careers. In turn, the programme showcases the exceptional talent and prowess of our Fountain University students, reflecting our commitment to excellence in education.
