As a department committed to fostering language proficiency, communication abilities, and academic excellence, we are dedicated to providing our students with a comprehensive and enriching educational experience. Our department proudly offers three distinguished programs: English, French, and Linguistics. The programmes in the department are meticulously designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in a diverse array of professional fields. The students are free to choose whether to be in Language or Literature from 200 level.  The department has seasoned academics. About the Department

Our History

Established in 2023/2024 Academic Session and approved for takeoff by National Universities Commission on 6th November, 2023, the department houses three programmes: English studies, French studies and Linguistics. The department started academic activities in the same session.

Philosophy

The Department creates adequate competence and communication abilities and offers graduates a high level of proficiency. A great deal of emphasis is placed on achieving improved knowledge in these fields as well as on acquiring sufficient language skills for use in the variety of administrative and professional jobs that are available in the labour market.

To produce indispensable linguists and literary scholars who are morally exceptional.

Vision

To be a leading department in mentoring aspiring linguists and literary scholars equipped with creativity prowess and digital linguistic innovations.

Requirements

B.A. English Language Studies

In addition to UTME requirements, candidates should possess five O’ Level Credits Passes in WASSCE, GCE, SSCE, SAISSCE (NBAIS), NECO or its equivalent credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English, at not more than two sittings.  

B.A. Literature in English  

In addition to UTME requirements, candidates should possess five O’ Level Credits Passes in WASSCE, GCE, SSCE, SAISSCE (NBAIS), NECO or its equivalent credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English, at not more than two sittings.

B.A. Linguistics

In addition to UTME requirements, candidates should possess at least Five Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) credit passes in any subject combination including English Language in not more than two sitting. In addition, Credit pass in an African Language will be an advantage. 

B.A. French Studies

In addition to UTME requirements, candidates should possess five O’ Level Credits Passes in WASSCE, GCE, SSCE, SAISSCE (NBAIS), NECO or its equivalent credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, at not more than two sittings.

Five SSC credit passes in Arts subjects, two of which must be at the Advanced Level and should be in Literature in English, History, Government, CRS, IRS and any Nigerian Language. JUPEB, IJMB, FUO DIPLOMA and similar certificates from accredited institutions or a minimum of merit grade in University/ National Diploma, NCE in relevant fields are required.
