About the Department

Our History

Established as one of the departments under the College of Management and Social Sciences which was established in 2007, the Department of Public Administration has a rich legacy of producing outstanding graduates destined for leadership roles in the public and private sectors. Our dedicated faculty, led by esteemed scholars such as Prof. A. Usman and Prof. A.O. Lalude are committed to academic excellence and innovation.

Requirements

The entry requirements for a B.Sc. Degree in Public Administration shall include at least five (5) credit passes in five subjects, obtained in not more than two sittings, in any Senior Secondary School Certificate examination such as GCE, WASC, or NECO. These subjects must include English Language, Economics, and Government/History. Other relevant subjects may include Accounting, Principles of Accounting, Commerce, Office Practice, and Secretarial Studies. Additionally, applicants must achieve an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Below are the Direct Entry (DE) requirements for Public Administration.

  • Applicants must possess two (2) ‘A’ level passes graded A-E, chosen from Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Government, Geography, and Statistics to be considered for admission through DE.
  • Fountain University’s College of Management and Social Sciences offers special consideration to DE applicants with an Upper Credit in Public Administration or Local Government Studies at the National Diploma level.
  • Additionally, applicants holding an HND or Advanced Diploma with a Lower Credit from any Nigerian Accredited Institution may receive an offer to study Public Administration under the DE requirements.
  • UTME requirements are also applicable to all concerned Direct Entry Applicants.

Conversion students from any department who are interested in pursuing a Public Administration degree program are welcome to apply. However, they should be prepared to complete some prerequisite in Public Administration Core Courses as instructed by the Public Administration Department. This is to ensures, they have a strong foundation in Public Administration before commencing the applied Public Administration Degree courses.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Programme

Requirements for Admission:

  • A minimum of second class in any discipline from Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria, or any other recognized University.
  • A Higher National Diploma with an upper credit level pass or 3.50 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent from a recognized institution in the social and management sciences.
  • Applicants with a third-class Honours Degree in Public Administration, Social Sciences, and Management Sciences may be considered at the department’s discretion.

MPA Programme
Requirements for Admission:
Admission into the Master of Public Administration program requires a First Degree in Public Administration or its equivalent from Fountain University, Osogbo or from any accredited Institution of Higher Learning in Nigeria, as well as from institutions abroad recognized by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC).
The Master of Public Administration program aims to equip students with the professional knowledge and abilities needed to perform efficiently and effectively in both public and private sectors of the economy.

This program is intended for individuals currently employed in the public or private sectors who seek to advance their knowledge and abilities in management and administration.

MSc. Programme
Requirements for Admission:
Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree from any Nigerian government-recognized university, both domestic and international. Graduates of Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria, or other accredited universities are eligible if they have earned at least a Second-Class Honours Lower Division degree in Public Administration with a GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally:

  • Political science honours degree holders who have completed at least 24 credits in Public Administration are eligible.
  • Applicants holding a postgraduate diploma in Public Administration from other accredited universities or from Fountain University, Osogbo, with a credit pass are also eligible.
  • Candidates must meet the general admission requirements for Direct Entry and/or the departmental O’ level to qualify for the M.Sc. degree programs.

The philosophy of the program emphasizes the importance of providing graduate education and training in Public Administration. This includes broadening students’ intellectual exposure, developing their capacity for rigorous research in core areas of the discipline, and applying theoretical understanding and research results to problem-solving.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme
Requirements for Admission:
Candidates must be graduates of Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria, or other recognized institutions, holding a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Public Administration or Masters in Public Administration (MPA) with a GPA of 3.5 and above on a 5-point scale, or as applicable in other institutions.
The philosophy of the PhD program places a strong emphasis on instruction and training in various facets of public administration. This is aimed at strengthening candidates’ sense of responsibility and inquiry, as well as improving their ability to conduct research, teach, and carry out administrative duties in both the public and private sectors of the economy.
