HOD”S WELCOME ADDRESS

Welcome to the Department of Sociology at Fountain University Osogbo. The Department focuses on all aspects of the social world. Ours research is grounded in |thorough understanding of sociological theories, international ethical principles and conducted with exacting methodological standard. Our particular areas of expertise include: Crime and Security, Sociology of Development, Rural Sociology, community policing, industrial crime, Immigration and Ethnicity, Health, Stratification, Work and Labour Markets, Political Sociology, The Sociology of Culture, and The Study of Social Networks and Community. The Department is a place for intellectual growth, a commitment to understanding major societal problems through research and publication, in-class teaching, and out-of-the-classroom experiences.

PHILOSOPHY

Fountain University Osogbo Sociology is one of the top departments. The department has historically established multiple social scientific paradigms. We are a diverse community of scholars and students, committed to high quality research and innovative teaching in sociology. In our program, you’ll study the complexity of social issues and social change and apply a critical lens to issues like Social engagement, community policing and sociology of development, industrial crime, social networking, rural development and migration, culture and media, race and racism, social movements and identities, health care and more. Also, Critical and interdisciplinary approaches to studying social relations, social fields, and social action in a world facing existential crises

Aim and  Objectives

  • To provide training in the principles of sociology and their application
  • Stimulate the students intellectually through the programme, in such a way that they understand and appreciate social problems.
  • To provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge.
  • To develop in students, the ability to apply the knowledge to the resolution of societal problems and conflicts.
  • To develop in students, such skills and competency that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial.
  • Provide the students with necessary skills for studying and analyzing society.
  • Provide the students with the skill-base from which they can proceed to higher studies in sociology
  • To imbue in the students a deep appreciation of the social dynamics of society and the impact of this on wider socio-economic development and societal well–being.

Admission Requirement

UTME

Candidates for admission into the five year degree programme should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education, NECO or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, obtained in not more than two sittings, which must include English Language and Mathematics and at least two other social science subjects.

Direct Entry(Conversion):

 Candidates for direct entry into the degree programme in sociology, should possess five credit passes in the General Certificate of Education, NECO, Senior Secondary School Certificate or their equivalents, with at least five credit passes, obtained in not more than two sittings, which must include English Language and Mathematics and at least two other social science subjects.

In addition, Candidates must possess Diploma in any of the following area: Industrial and Labour Relations, Marketing, General Administration, Social Development, Sociology, Public Administration, Personnel Management, Adult Education and Co-operative studies or any other relevant Diploma, NCE and HND in any courses with at least credit or pass as reviewed by the departmental admission committee.
