About the Department

Our History

The Department of Public Health at Fountain University was established in November 2020 following approval from the National University Commission (NUC) after a successful Resource Verification Exercise. It emerged as one of the Departments within the College of Basic Medical and Health Sciences.

 

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Programme is to produce highly motivated graduates of high academic standards with sufficient exposure to public health. These graduates are equipped to function effectively in the field of public health, possessing a broad-based academic professional training and competence. The programme reflects a commitment to the current national preventive health care system and services.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Public Health is to prevent diseases, promote health, prolong lives, and enhance general well-being through organized and interdisciplinary efforts. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address public health challenges and contribute to the improvement of community health.

Vision

The Department envisions a society of healthy communities in which all individuals can live a life of full potential. It aspires to be a leader in promoting public health excellence, fostering community partnerships, and advancing innovative approaches to address public health issues.

Student Population

The Public Health Department began with four students and has since grown significantly. Currently, the department boasts a total of one hundred and sixty-six (166) students, reflecting a growing interest in public health education and the department's commitment to academic excellence and student success.

Requirements

  1. B.Sc. Public Health
 
 
 
 

Candidates seeking admission into B.Sc. Public Health programme through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) mode must possess credit passes Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) conducted by West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO), General Certificate Examination (GCE) at Ordinary Level or its equivalent in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at not more than two (2) sittings and an acceptable pass mark at the UTME conducted by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Such a candidate must also satisfy the post-UTME requirement of the University.

For Direct Entry candidates, A’ level passes in Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Zoology, or related discipline may be accepted into year two of the B.Sc Public Health programme. Candidates with an Ordinary National Diploma in related Biological Sciences may also be considered for admission through direct entry mode of admission.
